Scoring guide
How Ballon d’Or Race ranks players
Ballon d’Or Race asks a specific question: how much above-baseline match performance has a player accumulated against the opponents and in the competitions we include? It is a transparent scoring model, not the official Ballon d’Or vote. A high score means a strong result under these chosen rules; it is not proof that every relevant part of a player’s season has been measured.
Start with the match rating
PitchAPI supplies league and Champions League ratings; Highlightly supplies the selected cup ratings. We subtract a baseline of 6 and set any negative result to zero. A 6.0 rating contributes nothing, a 7.0 rating produces one rating point, and an 8.0 produces about 2.83 after applying the exponent. The exponent of 1.5 rewards stronger performances more sharply than a straight subtraction. It also means that averaging ratings before applying the formula would produce a different result.
Separate performance from context
Only the rating points are multiplied by opponent strength, league weight and match importance. The latest saved ClubElo observation strictly before the match is used where available; ratings more than 120 days old use the neutral fallback. These opponent adjustments describe the team faced, not the player’s own club. The league weights are Ballon d’Or Race’s editorial settings, not an official coefficient or a statement that every match in one league is harder than every match in another.
How points work
The same rules apply to every player. These are Ballon d’Or Race’s own scoring weights.
Rating points = max(0, match rating − 6)1.5
Match points = rating points × opponent strength × league weight × match importance
Ratings below 6 give zero rating points. Goals, assists and other match statistics are shown for context and add no separate bonus. Match points are added across the season.
League multipliers
Domestic league matches use a match-importance factor of ×1.00.
| League | Weight |
|---|---|
| Premier League | ×1.00 |
| La Liga | ×0.98 |
| Bundesliga | ×0.96 |
| Serie A | ×0.94 |
| Ligue 1 | ×0.92 |
Champions League stages
The Champions League uses ×1.00 for league weight and the stage multiplier below for match importance.
| Stage | Weight |
|---|---|
| League phase | ×1.05 |
| Knockout play-offs | ×1.10 |
| Round of 16 | ×1.10 |
| Quarter-finals | ×1.90 |
| Semi-finals | ×3.25 |
| Final | ×5.40 |
How opponent strength uses Elo
We use the latest saved ClubElo rating before the match. Elo 1700 is neutral (×1.00); stronger opponents increase points and weaker opponents reduce them.
Opponent factor = 1 + (Elo − 1700) × 60 ÷ 40,000, limited to ×0.25–×1.75. Missing Elo, or an observation more than 120 days old, uses ×1.00.
Domestic cup preview
Available completed matches are included; data backfill is in progress. Cup points = max(0, rating − 6)1.5 × cup importance. Opponent and league multipliers are neutral; no extra stat or trophy bonuses apply.
Copa del Rey, DFB-Pokal and Coppa Italia: ×0.55. EFL Cup: ×0.40. Community Shield, German Super Cup and French Super Cup: ×0.30. Coverage is partial and cup ratings come from Highlightly.

The EFL Cup bonus is 20% of the English league-title bonus. Super Cup bonuses are 10% of their country’s league-title bonus. These are our model settings.
Each verified participant receives the same bonus. A player can receive only one domestic league-title bonus, from their latest verified winning campaign. Cup and Champions League bonuses are separate. Selected domestic cup matches are included in a partial preview.
Why goals and assists have no extra bonus
We show reported statistics to make a performance easier to inspect. They are not an explanation of the provider’s proprietary rating formula. Goals, assists and other actions may already affect that rating, so this version avoids automatically rewarding them a second time. Accurate passes and defensive actions are context, not extra points.
What missing data does
A missing rating is estimated only when positive playing minutes are known and the player has an observed average within the included competitions. Estimated appearances are labelled. An unused player does not receive the season average, and a missing statistic is not converted into a reported zero. A missing rating with unverified participation contributes no match points. Read the current coverage report before comparing players with different amounts of available data.
Why playing more still matters
The season score is a sum, so additional above-baseline performances can increase it. The baseline and exponent reduce the value of ordinary performances, but do not eliminate the advantage of additional appearances. A player who misses games can still lead through stronger performances; there is no guarantee that a voter would make the same comparison.
How to read the competition filter
Selecting a league or the Champions League recalculates points, average ratings and player positions using only that competition. Returning to All competitions restores the overall table. The default list contains 30 players, while search can find players outside that group.
Model history and independence
The weights were explored using historical seasons and adjusted during development. Matching a past award list is not independent proof of predictive accuracy. This current-season version subsequently removed additional stat bonuses and season-balance adjustments. It excludes international matches and cup matches outside the partial preview, and therefore does not reproduce the full official award assessment.
